Sinds 2009 is de FINMA de toezichthouder in Zwitserland over alle partijen die actief zijn in de Zwitserse financiële markten: banken, verzekeraars, beurzen, vermogensbeheerders, beleggingsfondsen, tussenpersonen, enzovoorts. De FINMA vertegenwoordigt ook Zwitserland in veel internationale organen en commissies van toezichthouders, zoals de International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) en de Financial Action Task Force.
